Working as a scientist with an interest in scientific illustration. Primarily molecules but also more general 3d digital art with a scientific angle.
Currently I am working with Cararra 8.5 which is OK in many ways, very intuitive to work with, but quite buggy and sometimes a but buggy and unstable. It has everything from modelling to rendering but it is definitely the poor cousin of Maya.
I use GIMP for textures and do my best to avoid post work apart from contrast brightness adjustment. I hate everything that smells like photoshop (sorry, 99% of the digital art world) but I confess to a few touches to remove some nasty UV borders. In those cases a freeware program called Paint.net is excellent.
